Jersey Girl
Relaxed chic with a dash of liberation, bottled. It's more than appropriate that Chanel's new Jersey eau de toilette, part of the Les Exclusifs collection, borrows from the boys with its traditionally masculine notes of lavender and musk. After all, it was Coco who, in 1916, introduced the fabric -- an inexpensive, elasticized cotton knit ideal for draping, and a longtime staple of men's undergarments -- into the realm of womenswear. Her relaxed suits and fluid trousers (then a shocking proposition for a lady) not only ushered in a new attitude of easy elegance but also were viewed as liberation by a generation of women who had been politely suffocating in corsets and tightly cinched waists up until that time. "I make fashion women can live in, breahte in, feel comfortable in, and look younger in," Chanel said. Given its luxuriously oversize 6.8-ounce bottle, Jersey the fragrance (created by resident nose Jacques Polge) is meant to be lived in as well. $210; chanel.com.

State of Play - Chanel's new fragrance, Jersey - a mix of lavender, vanilla, and musk - was named after the fabric Coco Chanel took from menswear and applied to women's designs. Still, we couldn't resist bringing it to the Jersey shore to see if it prompted any fist-pumping.
