Breaking Dawn
"Time is a luxury," says Pierre-Alexis Dumas, artistic director of Hermes. The concept plays heavily into the house's latest fragrance, Jour d'Hermes, which even the most rudimentary of French speakers and soup lovers know means "day". This particular scent, Dumas explains, specifically relates to the dawn, and in a world of fashionable fragrances that tend to lean toward the more heady domain of sultry opium dens and decadent late evenings, it's a crisp, fresh new take. Chimes master perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena, responsible for many of the brand's greatest hits like Terre d'Hermes and Un Jardin sur le Nil: "Besides, Hermes is not a house of the night." So what does daybreak smell like? While Ellena was inspired by the light-infused paintings of Botticelli and Chasseriau, the goddesses of ancient Greek mythology, and iconic floral scarves, the ultrafeminine blend is also an homage to white flowers. Just don't ask Ellena to name names: "By not displaying discernible scents, the perfume is open to interpretation," he points out. "Everyone can bring themselves to it." Just make sure not to sleep in too late.
Shoe guru Pierre Hardy designed the bisected transparent bottle, which allows plenty of light to pass through.
