For all its fashion accolates, Paris is ... a city about aesthetics. It's also associated with the elegant Gallic woman, that connoisseur of sexy perfume and then effortless swipe of red lipstick. But as I recently walked those pretty cobblestoned streets, I noticed that the classical norms of beauty are changing: Whereas a sneaker on the street was verboten in years past, the chicest French girls now sport pristine Stan Smiths with their A.P.C. jeans and artfully disheveled topknots. And so I found myself on a mission to uncover the secrets of this new, globalized generation.
...to act as my ambassador than model, music producer, and cool-French-girl icon Caroline de Maigret, who literally cowrote the book How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are. ...I press her for details of the shopping variety and hit the streets armed with her recommendations. While their grandmoters spritzed eau de toilette on themselves, today's mademoiselles perfume their pieds-à-terre instead. Everyone in Paris is crazy for the sprawling Merci (III boulevard Beaumarchais) ... but de Maigret points me to the lesser-known, more intimate version, Astier de Villatte (173 rue Saint-Honoré). There I discover ... the most divine candles and incense galore.
