In the early 1990s, Ellena combined two synthetic materials that recalled the aroma of green tea. Bulgari commissioned a perfume out of the scent, intending it just as a gift for clients. The result, Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert, was so well received that the brand started selling it. With green tea, citrus, and a smoky wood accord, it had a broad, indefinable appeal. It even provided the blueprint for CK One, the first successful unisex fragrance.

Who's the say what a woman or man should smell like? The coolest new scents occupy neutral territory.
Why do men and women pefer different fragrances? ... By the time the commercial fragrance industry exploded, post-World War II, gender distinctions were in place... Then, in the '90s, fashion enjoyed an androgynous moment, thanks in part to the rise of grunge music (think Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love's almost identical haircuts and outfits.) To capitalize on the trend, executives at Calvin Klein tasked fragrance developer Ann Gottlieb with creating a unisex scent. "I'd love to tell you we had a plan and everything was deliberate, but it really wasn't," says Gottlieb with a laugh, as she reminisces about the ck one project. "Most of the perfumers we approached came up with men's colognes that were just slightly less masculine." After a lot of trial and error, she and her team realized they needed citrus and settled on the now famous bergamot-and-pineapple-tinged blend developed by fragrance house Firmenich.

Fragrance News - Dollars & Scents -- Don't judge a book by its cover -- or a perfume by its bottle. Fragrance experts single out the best scents under $60 (and explain why "smelling like cheap perfume" isn't the insult it used to be).
Calvin Klein CK One, $42 -- This unisex citrus-herbal blend was an enormous hit in the '90s. Today, insiders praise it as "incredible," says [scent-designer Dawn] Goldworm. "And the perfumers who worked on it, Harry Fremont and Alberto Morillas, are still some of the best in the industry. So many people try to rip off CK One in laundry detergents and niche fragrances." The scent introduced a new kind of citrus note to Americans, says [perfumers Francis] Kurkdjian. "Prior to CK One, you'd find citrus notes mostly in a cologne, like Acqua di Parma Colonia or Guerlain Eau de Cologne. CK One set up a pattern of fragrances being sexy and fresh, and before that you couldn't imagine those qualities being together.

Intrepid fragrance explorer Courtney Dunlop uncovers informs history of how culture informs what smells good to us. ... Americans, known for our insatiable appetites and all for knocking one over the head with an olfactory hammer, love gourmand notes like vanilla and sweet, fruity notes like strawberry. And although fresh, "clean" scents are also typically American (Calvin Klein CK One started a revolution when it was launched in 1994), the most popular fragrances in the U.S. have traditionally been feminine florals such as Ralph Lauren Romance and Lancome Tresor. This is no doubt left over from our shared history with the British, who are known for, and still enjoy, English-garden floral notes of rose, lily of the valley, and violet.
